£85.00

Framed 18th century print after Van Dyck of Maria Ruten, his wife. On the reverse is a helpful label that reads:

“Mary Ruthven (pronounced Riven)

Mary Ruthven was 2nd daughter of Patrick Lord Ruthven, 5th son of William 4th Lord Ruthven & and 1st Earl of Gowrie.

She was Maid of Honour to Queen Henrietta Maria & Van Dyck was Court Painter to Charles I.

The marriage probably took place in 1639. There was one child of the marriage, a daughter named Justinea, born in 1641.

Mary Ruthven died about 1645.”

My Granny (antiques dealer Margery Byam Shaw) also added a label noting the sad fact that his daughter, Justinea, was baptised on the 9th December, the same day that Van Dyck died.
